A group of researchers from Sweden's Uppsala University Department of Nanotechnology has produced a large-area, water-absorbing form of magnesium carbonate. The new substance produced was called Upsalite.
"Contrary to 100 years of scientific literature, we have proven that amorphous (amorphous) magnesium carbonate can be produced with low temperature," said Joan Gomez de la Toree of the department.
Upsalite is planned to be used in a wide range of applications in the electronics and pharmaceutical industries, from moisture control processes to absorbing toxins after oil spills and chemical spills.
In 2011, researchers were able to produce 'upsalite' by frothing carbon dioxide in an alcohol-containing freezing system. However, one year was spent in the testing and analysis process of the produced substance.
Upsalite is an alkaline earth metal-carbonate substance with the largest measured surface area. The interior of Upsalite is filled with pores less than 10 nanometers in diameter.
One of the research staff, Uppsala University nanotechnology prefessor Maria Stromme, announced that the unique properties of the discovered 'impossible substance' will make it easier for industries to produce sustainable products.
