Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality Collected 8 Tons of Waste Batteries in 61 Years. Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has been protecting nature with its waste batteries collection project since 2005. Waste batteries, which pose a great threat to the environment and human health, are collected separately and sent for recycling through battery collection boxes and bins placed in schools, institutions and organizations. The Metropolitan has prevented 2005 tons of waste batteries from mixing with the soil with the works it has started since 61.

Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality collects waste batteries in order to prevent these hazards caused by batteries. With the battery collection boxes and bins placed in schools, institutions and organizations, batteries are also collected and sent for recycling. With the battery collection project started in 2005, more than 2012 tons of batteries were prevented from being thrown away until the end of 61. In this context, a total of 3 waste battery collection boxes were placed in places such as public institutions and organizations, schools, health institutions, workplaces, regular residential areas and industrial facilities.

Batteries, which are needed in all areas of life, from controls to watches, from toys to many other electronic products, threaten human and environmental health. A waste battery, which is not recycled, thrown into nature or in the garbage, makes 4 cubic meters of space toxic.

Batteries have great harm to human health and the environment. Batteries are made from mercury, cadmium, lead, zinc, manganese, lithium, iron, nickel, cobalt and chemicals. Indiscriminate disposal of these batteries and their direct or indirect delivery to the receiving environment poses great environmental hazards. The metals in the batteries can get into the soil and then into the groundwater. At first, the soil becomes unusable and the water pollution caused by metals turns the aquatic ecosystem upside down. Over time, these effects are also seen on humans. The main diseases caused by waste batteries are neurological disorders, central nervous system diseases, cancer, kidney and liver diseases. The damage of all substances in batteries can sometimes reach a lethal level. Substances get into the human body from the food of animals or water by mixing with the soil.
