poses serious public health problems
Ministry officials stated that the wastes generated during the activities of health institutions carry a higher risk of infection than other types of waste.
Pointing out that many microorganisms such as HIV, hepatitis B and C viruses can be transmitted through medical wastes, the officials said:
“The presence of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and chemical disinfectants in healthcare facilities exacerbates the dangers from poorly managed medical waste. Therefore, inadequate and inappropriate treatment of medical waste has serious public health consequences as well as adverse effects on the environment.”
Authorities also stated that it is mandatory for health institutions with a capacity of at least 20 beds to build temporary waste storage.
