The conference titled “The Future of the World and Science” was held by Koç University Faculty of Medicine at the Rumeli Feneri Campus. As a speaker at the conference, the editorial director of Science, one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the world, and the former president of the American National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Dr. Bruce Alberts attended.
Bruce Alberts, who served as the US science ambassador between 2009 and 2011, is also Honorary Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco, USA. Pointing out at the conference that scientists' knowledge and problem-solving skills are of critical importance for all countries, regardless of their level of development, Bruce Alberts said, "Every society needs the values of science such as honesty, generosity, and respect for all ideas and opinions without questioning their source. Therefore, the importance of science in Turkey's future success will be enormous. Everyone knows the importance of scientific and technological development and the unending need of today's world for innovations that come from continuous scientific and technical progress.
Stating that science and technology institutions should develop themselves with international studies in order to ensure the progress needed by societies, Alberts said, “It seems more necessary than ever to make maximum use of the mental and material resources of the world. In order to achieve this, our cultures must be of a nature that rewards risk-taking and support an approach that brings different ideas and approaches together in a multi-disciplinary environment.”
Having served as the President of the US National Academy of Sciences for 12 years, Prof. Bruce Alberts also mentioned that countries need different talents in a wide range of scientific expertise for long-term success at the conference.
Alberts continued: “For long-term success, universities need to broaden their sense of duty and open new avenues for scientists to be in positions where they can make a difference in public policy, industry, government, journalism, law, commerce and education. Establishing new international partnerships, especially in science, will be extremely important in the coming period.”
