Christian Chartier, Spokesperson of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), said: "Destroying the poisonous gases and nerve gas in Syria's stockpiles at sea may be a possible alternative to finding a country that will voluntarily host the destruction of chemical weapons."

Making a statement to the Associated Press (AP) news agency about the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons, Chartier stated that the destruction of the said chemical weapons on a boat or floating equipment at sea is a viable option, and said, “We are evaluating all alternatives. "This could be a possible alternative to finding a country that will voluntarily host the destruction of chemical weapons," he said.

Scientist Ralf Trapp, who provides consultancy on the elimination of international chemical weapons in France, also noted that the transfer of chemical weapons to distant areas by ships has been tried in the past, and that there can be numerous advantages of using a floating facility for the destruction of weapons, the most important of which is that the destruction is carried out away from the areas where people are present.

The OPCW aims to destroy 2014 tons of chemical weapons by mid-300.

Albania, which the US offered to host the destruction of chemical weapons, turned down the offer. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said that his country does not have the necessary means to destroy Syria's chemical weapons.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen stated that the issue was not handled within NATO and said, “The process regarding the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria is progressing positively. The United Nations and OPCW are spearheading this work. We are also following the issue in the NATO-Russia Council. Tomorrow we will receive an update briefing from the organization. No request has been received from NATO in this regard,” he said.
