İnönü University is establishing Turkey's largest solar power plant.

İnönü University is establishing Turkey's largest solar power plant. A protocol was signed with the company that undertook the construction of the "Solar Power Plant", which was designed to contribute naturally to the energy source used in İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center and is planned to be completed in the summer of 2014.
The signing and information meeting about the project held in the meeting hall of İnönü University Rectorate building was attended by Rector Prof. Dr. Cemil Çelik, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Ismail Ozdemir, Prof. Dr. Asim Künkul, Prof. Dr. Yusuf Türköz, Assistant General Secretary. Assoc. Dr. Kadir Kartalcı, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Ünsal Özgen, Chief Physician of Turgut Özal Medical Center Assist. Assoc. Dr. Mehmet Aslan, Deputy Secretary General Cevdet Atalan, Anel Telekom A.Ş Official Evren Evcit and members of the press attended.

Stating that they were excited to bring the 5 MW solar power plant to the university for the first time in Turkey, Rector Prof. Dr. Cemil Celik said:

“When we consider that Turkey is dependent on foreign sources in terms of energy, approximately 85 billion dollars of money goes abroad annually. It is very meaningful for countries like ours that institutions meet their energy needs by utilizing natural resources such as solar energy. In this context, the Solar Power Plant to be established in our University is extremely important. We are procuring 19 percent of the power plant, whose cost is approximately 80 million TL, with bank loans. This is an investment made by our university using its own resources. It is not an investment in our 2014 budget. The peculiarity of this investment is that it is Turkey's largest solar power plant. The fact that such an important investment is being made is the most important proof that İnönü University is an entrepreneurial and innovative university.”

Inonu University Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Ünsal Özgen said, “Inönü University campus receives a lot of sunlight. It has the potential to produce an average of 1.700 hours of active solar energy per year. This is a pretty good number. Germany is worth half that, but Turkey has more than a thousand times more solar energy investments and facilities. The closed area of Turgut Özal Medical Center is 130.000 square meters. Our center has a total of 2 beds, 255 of which are intensive care units. Our hospital is completely heated and cooled by air conditioning. As such, it requires intense energy. Since 1.100 was not completed, I would like to give an example of the last year completed. In 2013, 2012 million Kw/S of electricity was consumed and 29 million TL was paid for it. About 8,28 percent of this energy is used during the daytime. Electricity prices are increased by an average of 55 percent per year. We aimed to establish this 10 MW solar power plant on an area of 100 decares in the south of our campus and its technical studies have been completed. With the 5 MW capacity to be established, 5% of the electricity needs of the institution will be produced. Since this energy is produced during the day, it will meet 29 percent of the total electricity bill.

Although the installation cost of the facility is 19 million TL, the life of the facility is a minimum of 25 and an average of 40 years. Approximately 80 percent of loans were used for the establishment of this facility. Considering this financial cost, it pays for itself in 2014 years in 6.8. Again, considering an annual increase of 10 percent in electricity prices, the payback period of the facility drops to 5.1 years. If the prices are fixed, after financing itself, the net profit of this facility will be 25 million TL in 57 years. If there is a 5% price increase, we will save 127 million TL, and if there is a 10% price increase, we will save around 240 million TL.”

Undertaking the construction of the Solar Power Plant to be established, Anel Telekom A.Ş. Enver Evcit, its official, said, “When we look at the 5 MW power that will be produced by the power plant that we will establish in İnönü University, in terms of solar energy, it currently constitutes 60 percent of the installed power in Turkey alone. The fact that İnönü University, which is a state university, takes this step means that it has alone made 60 percent of the total power established in our country so far. I congratulate the entrepreneurial success of the University, which acts faster than the private sector.”

After the speeches, the "Solar Power Plant" construction protocol was signed.
