Two-thirds of carbon emissions come from 90 companies

According to the research, which will be published in the journal Climatic Change, companies such as Chevron, Exxon and BP, which produce oil, gas and coal, are at the top of the list.
In the news published in the Guardian newspaper, it is emphasized that an estimated half of the greenhouse gas emissions to date have been produced in the last 25 years.

Richard Heede, a researcher at the Climate Responsibility Institute in Colorado, USA, who wrote the report, said, “There are thousands of oil, gas and coal producers in the world. But considering that the decision makers are at the level of CEOs or ministers, those who are actually responsible fit in one or two buses.” said.

Which companies? The report states that the total carbon dioxide and methane emissions between 1751 and 2010 were 914 gigatons (billion tons), of which 63 percent were produced by 90 companies.

Seven of these 90 companies are cement producers, while the rest are all oil, gas and coal producing companies. 50 of them are private investor companies; Chevron, Exxon, BP and Shell lead in petroleum, British Coal Corp, Peabody Energy and BHP Billiton in coal.

The 31 listed companies are public companies such as Saudi Aramco, Russian Gazprom and Norway's Statoil.

Nine companies are state-owned companies that mainly produce coal in countries such as China, the former Soviet Union, North Korea and Poland.
In the report, it was stated that the 30 private companies, which are at the top of the list, are responsible for 20 percent of carbon emissions.
Climate change experts emphasized the importance of the report in terms of holding individual companies responsible for carbon emissions rather than governments.
