Support is increasing for the project “Development of Combustor Suitable for Turkish Lignite for Thermal Power Plants”. It has been reported that Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University will provide consultancy to the 1.87 million lira "Development of Combustor Suitable for Turkish Lignite for Thermal Power Plants" project together with TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Energy Institute and Yıldız Technical University.
In a written statement from Recep Tayyip Erdogan University, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Dr. It was stated that the project with a budget of approximately 15 million liras and a duration of 1003 months with the subject of "Development of Combustor for Thermal Power Plants Suitable for Turkish Lignite", which was planned and prepared by Adnan Midilli 1.87 months ago and submitted to the TÜBİTAK 30 priority areas program, was revised and accepted.
Emphasizing that 2011 thousand 229 GWh of electricity was produced in Turkey in 395, natural gas was used at a rate of 45,36 percent from primary sources and 28,87 percent of coal (lignite, imported coal, hard coal, asphaltite) was used in the statement, the following statements were included. :
“Our country is a country with large lignite resources despite its low calorific value. There are approximately 12 billion tons of known lignite reserves in our country. In the next period, the share of coal in electricity production should definitely be increased and technology development studies should be carried out for electricity generation from coal. Considering that our country is a developing country and needs a new energy source of approximately 3 GWh every year, and considering the fact that natural gas has to gradually decrease its share in energy production due to its costs, coal burning technologies must be developed in our country.
In the statement, it was stated that there are significant problems in the combustion systems used in coal power plants, and the following was noted:
“There is no precise secondary air fuel control. Fuel cannot be sent homogeneously from the burner to the boiler. The location of the fireball in the boiler cannot be controlled. The sliding of the fireball causes the microstructure of the pipe bundles in the boiler to deteriorate and the pipe bursts. NOx emissions will be a problem, especially in the coming years, with the reduction of emission limits. The aim of this project is to develop and localize pulverized coal burners suitable for low quality domestic coals with low NOx emissions, which increase the combustion efficiency, to be used in thermal power plants and the power generation sector, in order to eliminate the negativities.”
In the statement, it was stated that with the project of developing a burner suitable for Turkish lignite for thermal power plants, it is aimed to bring pulverized coal burners used in thermal power plants to the domestic industry together with know-how:
“Among the objectives of the project are the development of combustors suitable for the chemical and physical properties of low quality lignite, a combustor that will both increase combustion efficiency and reduce NOx emissions, and a combustor that can provide homogeneous combustion and temperature distribution in the boiler. In addition, it is aimed to develop the construction that will provide the appropriate air-fuel mixture in the burner and to ensure that the coal is homogeneously dispersed into the boiler at the burner outlet. Our university will advise the project together with TÜBİTAK MAM Energy Institute and Yıldız Technical University.”
