A Turkish scientist has designed a self-generating fiber.

A Turkish scientist has designed a self-generating fiber. Zirve University Industrial Engineering Faculty Member Asst. Assoc. Dr. Mevlüt Taşcan, in his research in the field of functional fiber production, designed a self-generating fiber using the solution fiber production technique.

According to the news of Today Newspaper, Asst. Assoc. Dr. Taşcan pointed out that the fibers produced in the University's Nanotechnology Center can be used in various fields, from car batteries to color-changing clothing, from earthquake sensors to charging electronic devices, as they are designed in the industrial field. Taşcan said that they will establish the Nonwoven (non-woven fabric) Research and Development Center for the first time in Turkey in 2014 by Zirve University in Gaziantep.

10 MILLION EURO SUPPORT

Mevlüt Taşcan, Director of the Summit University Nanotechnology Application and Research Center in Gaziantep, stated that the European Union and the Ministry of Science and Technology will provide 10 million Euros of support for the establishment of a Nonwoven Research and Development Center. Taşcan said that industrialists should turn to nanotechnology and continued as follows:

“Turkey is ahead of many countries in nanotechnology. However, it is still in the research phase and has not been able to convert the research results into usable products. The most important reason for this is that our industrialists were not sufficiently conscious of nanotechnology and could not be convinced that they could use this technology. There is a need for success stories that turn nanotechnology into products. The Nonwoven Center will close a big gap to guide the industrialists.”

The car will run without battery

Assist. Assoc. Dr. Mevlüt Taşcan stated that fiber is produced for the first time in the world with the fiber production technique from solution. Noting that the fiber, which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, can be used in many areas, he said: “There are fibers in car tires. When you use this fiber in tires and get enough electrical power from the fibers, cars will no longer need batteries.

If these fibers can be designed correctly in the industrial field, they will make our life much easier and cheaper. It can also make a great contribution to the measurement and notification of earthquakes, thanks to the voltage generated by the light pulling of the fiber from both ends.”

The mobile phone will charge while walking

Stating that with the use of fibers, there will be the possibility of self-charging of phones and similar electrical devices, Taşcan explained this project as follows: “If a dress is designed with the fiber we produce and this clothing is designed according to the charging possibilities of the mobile phone, you can automatically charge the phone and similar electronic devices while walking. Thanks to an assembly in the fibers, I was able to generate enough voltage for 100 mobile phones. This electrical energy can also be successfully put into service.”

color changing clothes

Taşcan stated that they are working on the fact that woolen fabrics never shrink after washing. He explained this practice as follows: “We collected sample wool from 100 Merino animals with very high quality wool, brought from Australia. When you wash it, we are trying to produce the fiber so that the wool shrinks but does not. Wool fiber attracts because of a substance called cysteine. In addition, when we use clothing, it can also produce clothes that change color during our movement.”
