İ.Ü Chemical Engineering Study “Electric Cable From The Board, Which Doesn't Burn For One Hour In Fire”

Inonu University, Faculty of Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Asst. Assoc. Dr. As a result of his work for 3 years, Yunus Önal produced an electric cable that does not burn for one hour using boron. Önal told Anadolu Agency (AA) that there is no area where cables are not used in daily life, especially in residences and electronic devices. Önal said, "Unless we can transmit electricity like sound waves, we are condemned to use cables", stating that the cable may be burned due to a connection error in the electrical contact, and continued: It is a material that contains about 10-15 additives that give it flexibility. So a copper cable is polymeric material around it. When electrical contact occurs due to a deformation in this cable, this polymeric material is burned.

In residential fires, workplace fires, fires caused by this electrical contact account for a large proportion of them.” Noting that he started a study 3 years ago to minimize electrical contact-related fires, Önal said, "My aim in this study was to increase the non-combustibility of the cable by adding boron material to this polymeric part." Assist. Assoc. Dr. Önal stated that he carried out the study in the laboratory allocated to him in the faculty, with materials he had increased from other projects. Pointing out that a cable company advertised that it had developed a non-burning cable for up to 18 minutes, but could not end it, Önal continued:

“When there is an electrical contact, the probability of a fire from it may vary depending on the cross-section of the cable, the amount of current flowing, the temperature, and many other parameters, but it is ideal to extend this period and take precautions before it burns. This is the basic logic of this study. Of course we will use pipes. We have 3 materials that give this kind of polymeric materials non-flammability. Brominated and phosphated organic compounds and boron. Boron is the most alternative among them. Because when the polymeric material is burned, bromine and phosphate can produce carcinogenic components in the environment. Boron, on the other hand, is non-flammable. There is no such danger of boron, as a temperature of over 3 degrees Celsius must occur for it to burn.”

– “78 percent of boron mines are in Turkey” Önal stated that the fact that 78 percent of the world's boron mines are in our country constitutes an important aspect of such a study and said: “So we find an alternative usage area for boron at the same time. The compound I produced within this framework will be a different and new additive that is added to polyvinyl chloride while producing PVC electrical cables. If we try to make only a cable from polyvinyl chloride, it will not be a cable. We add another new additive to 10-15 different additives that are added to it, but this is questionable. Does it increase the cost? Not possible. Since we will increase its non-flammability feature, we lose everything in the face of fire. Even if the cost is a very small amount, this cost increase in the face of fire cannot be discussed. What we have developed is an additional additive material to be added to the cable, but when we add it, we will increase the non-flammability of the cable.” Pointing out that the component he developed is a new mixture that will increase the non-flammability of the cable, Önal said, “Boron is a new component. Last year, we conducted experiments at a facility in Adana to determine whether the component we produced matched with the chemistry of the cable. In these preliminary tests, the electrical cable to which we added this component did not burn for about an hour, but it varies from cable to cable. The very thin cables used in the computer are separate. Very thick cables are separate. The cables of the high voltage lines are separate, but in our preliminary tests, we know that the cable does not burn in the electrical contact for about an hour.

– “It will break new ground in the industry” Expressing that Turkey has an important place in electrical cable production, Önal said, “Many of our companies export cables to many places abroad. The component I have developed will make the Turkish electrical cable market come to the fore even more abroad. It will revolutionize the industry. Since there is a new field for the use of boron, it will also provide added value to boron.” Stating that he applied to the Turkish Patent Institute for the patent of the component he developed, Önal stated that boron was used for the first time in the cable component and said, "It is a material that can easily form a basis for industrial application."
