Karamanoğlu Mehmetbey University (KMU) carried out a project on “Obtaining natural dyestuff from the outer shell of walnut fruit and investigating the potential of solar cells”. With this application, solar cells were produced from walnut shells.
KMU Technical Sciences Vocational School Food Technology Department lecturer Assist. Assoc. Dr. Prof. Dr. Cafer Akyürek was the researcher of the project. Dr. Savaş Sönmezoğlu, Res. See. Seçkin Akın and Dr. Hasan Flow did it. The project, supported by the KMU Scientific Research Projects (BAP) Commission, was carried out during February 2012 and February 2013 and was completed in one year.
In the study, juglone dyestuff was obtained from the outer shell of walnut fruit by hot extraction method. With the help of a nano-structured TiO2 spatula, which shows good electrical conductivity, dyestuff was plastered on FTO coated glass and dye sensitive solar cells were obtained. In addition, the current-voltage characteristics measured in a bright environment under atmospheric conditions were determined in order to investigate the use of the manufactured structures as Dye Sensitive Solar Cells (BDGP).
“PAINTING-SENSITIVE SOLAR BATTERIES ARE BOTH CHEAP AND ECO-FRIENDLY”
The researcher, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Cafer Akyürek said, “We carried out a study in order to obtain a dyestuff from the fruit shell of the walnut plant, which is grown in abundance in Karaman and whose shell is in a waste state, and to use this substance as a solar cell. The fact that no research or study has been carried out on this dyestuff until now has led us to such a research.” he said.
“It is a simple method to produce high-efficiency solar cells from juglone dyestuff obtained from waste natural walnut plants. Dye Sensitive Solar Cells have cheaper production steps than conventional solar cells currently on the market.” said Assist. Assoc. Dr. Akyürek said, “Producing electricity with this cheap and environmentally friendly system will greatly contribute to the country's economy and will greatly increase the use of clean energy. In addition, the use of these batteries will make it cheaper to use solar energy and more importantly, the usage area will gradually expand.” made a statement.
Assist. Assoc. Dr. Akyürek stated that most of the energy needed today is provided by fossil fuels and underlined that these fuels are not only limited but also cause significant damage to the environment. Akyürek said, “Environmentally friendly alternative energy sources should be sought and research on this subject should also be supported by the state.” he said.
