Antioxidant and many other benefits of propolis have been proven by the Department of Chemistry of Atatürk University. Atatürk University Faculty of Science, Department of Chemistry Professor. Dr. In the scientific study conducted by İlhami Gülçin, it was determined that propolis has a very strong antioxidant effect, prevents cancer, is good for stomach ulcers, heals mouth and tooth wounds, is effective against bacteria and viruses, and has anti-aging properties.

Gülçin, who is also a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that propolis, which is a product of beekeeping, has been widely used in Anatolia since ancient times, adding that they are curious because it is so widely used among the public and that they are conducting scientific studies on propolis for this purpose.

Explaining that they detected many properties of propolis in their study, Gülçin said that when looking at the literature, it has many biological activities, and that biological and pharmacological activities, especially antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, anticancer and antieging effects.

Pointing out that there is a lot of plant diversity in the region and that this adds value to beekeeping products, Gülçin said, “We took a fresh propolis sample from the region. We investigated its antioxidant and radical scavenging properties. We observed many excellent activities. We have seen that it has a stronger effect than almost the strongest antioxidants used, especially when compared with the standards.”

Emphasizing that propolis came to the fore again after the news that it was used by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Gülçin emphasized that in the second leg of the study, they investigated which substances caused these effective properties of propolis in their joint work with TÜBİTAK, and stated that there are more than 300 volatile and other organic components in propolis, especially phenolic compounds. and that it is very rich in polyphenolic content.

Underlining that propolis is also very rich in terms of amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, Prof. Dr. Gulcin said:

“These are the ingredients that already have pharmacological and biological effects. Flavones and flavonoids make up 15% of propolis. These are extremely important components for health. Today, from vegetables and fruits, especially in autumn, the components in plant food sources are phenols and flavonoids and similar components. In our research, we observed that especially caffeic acid and caffeic acid phenethyl ester are abundant, and it is also very rich in terms of vitamins A and C.”

“The secret of long life: propolis”

Reminding that the secrets of the long lives of the people of the Middle East have been investigated in recent studies, Gülçin said, “It is known that the people of the Far East have both long lives and stronger immune systems. The secret is said to be due to the propolis in their diet. Because propolis strengthens the defense system. It seriously inhibits the proliferation of tumor cells and the bacteria that cause the helicobacter pylori microorganism, which ulcer patients cannot cope with.

Emphasizing that their work has received more than 50 citations since its publication, Gülçin continued as follows:

“Especially for mouth and tooth wounds and other dental diseases. propolis sounds good. Most importantly, it prevents the development of tumor cells and the microorganism that causes ulcers. It has antibiotic and antiviral properties. It is also very effective against viruses. It has been proven to be anticancer. We know that it seriously supports the immune system. It has anti-aging properties. It is used effectively against microbial and viral infections.”

Gülçin stated that propolis is widely used in scientific researches in health sectors such as dentistry, pharmacy and medicine. We observed that some components, which are very important from a biological point of view, are abundant in propolis.”
