Daniel Aberdam and his team from France's National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) have succeeded in reprogramming hair stem cells and creating corneal cells from them. Scientists will next be transplanting the corneal cells into the patient and examining whether vision can be regained.
Daniel Aberdam, who undersigned the research, was awarded the Academy of Sciences award yesterday for this success.
The possibility of producing new corneal cells sheds light on scientists working on the treatment of visually impaired patients.
