Risk of cancer in vitamin pills containing antioxidants. It has been determined that antioxidant-containing vitamin pills can accelerate the development of pre-cancerous lesions and the progression of lung cancer.
A study of mice by scientists from the Gothenburg Cancer Center in Sweden showed that animals that were genetically modified to have small lung tumors and given vitamin E supplements grew tumors. It was stated that the number of tumors increased threefold and the rate of spread greatly increased.
Emphasizing that the cancer mice given vitamin E died twice as fast as they should, the scientists pointed out that the higher the dose of antioxidant pills, the greater the negative effect.
Although the research was carried out on mice, the scientists, who stated that this situation may be valid especially for people who smoke and in the early stages of lung cancer, advised not to use a balanced diet and vitamin pills without consulting a doctor.
The results of the study were published in the journal "Science Translational Medicine".
