Science magazine has identified 5 chemicals that cause obesity. Here is that list and its effects…. Obesity is one of the biggest problems of today. One of the reasons why this problem is becoming a big problem is that the chemicals that cause obesity are much closer to us than we think. Science magazine has identified the 5 chemicals closest to us that open the door to obesity.
There are many chemicals that cause obesity. Chemical components defined as 'obesogen' can cause lubrication by preventing the body from functioning normally.
According to the study of the journal Nature, chemicals that cause obesity are also found in various lunch boxes, feeding bottles, toys, plastic products, cookware and cosmetics. These chemicals, known as Endocrine Disruptors, can disrupt metabolism by interfering with the hormones secreted by the body.
Chemicals, which reveal their harmful effects by activating estrogen receptors, can cause many health problems in men and women. In addition to congenital malformations and developmental problems in girls during puberty, other problems such as breast cancer and muscle disorders may occur in boys.
Chemicals that can cause obesity and other health problems, as determined by the journal Science:
1- Bisphenol-A (BPA)
It is found in bottles and pacifiers, plastic products, canned food, and can cause obesity and cancer. Research on BPA, which has been used commercially for years, has revealed that the substance can cause serious harm to laboratory mice and humans. BPA activates estrogen receptors in the human body. BPA, which is mostly found in the womb, was detected in 96 percent of pregnant women in the USA as a result of urine tests.
Numerous studies on BPA have shown that the substance is linked to weight gain and obesity in both laboratory mice and humans. A study focused on cell structure showed that BPA has the effect of increasing fat cells. In addition to these effects, BPA also causes problems such as insulin resistance, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, cancer, and thyroid disorder.
There are also scientists who argue that BPA is not harmful in plastic products and canned foods.
2-Phthalate (Phthalate)
Chemicals found in many plastic products cause obesity and impaired sexual organ development in boys. Phthalates, which are used to make plastic materials soft and flexible, are found in many products such as food containers, cosmetics, shower curtains, toys. Phthalates, which can easily get into food by leaking from plastic, can get into the water we drink and even the air. A study conducted in Sweden showed that children can inhale phthalates from plastic surfaces and through the skin.
Phthalates, which are almost constantly detected in urine tests of US adults, can cause excess weight by activating hormone receptors known as PPARs that affect metabolism. Many studies have revealed that phthalates cause abdominal fat and insulin resistance, especially in men. Phthalates accumulating in the uterus can cause disorders in the male genitalia and low testosterone. Many governments and health organizations have recently started to take precautions against phthalates.
3-Atrazine (Herbicide)
The chemical, which is commonly used to kill plants in the USA, can cause birth defects, mitochondrial disorders and obesity. Banned decades ago in Europe for contaminating groundwater, Atrazine is widely used in the US. Known as an endocrine disorder, atrazine is considered a chemical that causes birth defects.
It has been noticed that the rate of obesity has increased in recent years in regions where atrazine is widely used as a pesticide in the USA. Atrazine, which causes mitochondrial disorders in laboratory rats, decreases the metabolic rate and causes adiposity.
4-Organotines
Organotins used as fungicides cause excess weight and fatty liver in laboratory mice. Tributyltin (TBT), one of the organotins used in industry for different purposes, is used in ships and giant shipping vessels to prevent the hull from being invaded by marine organisms. TBT, which is also used in wood preservative and industrial water systems, is banned in many countries due to the damage it causes to sea creatures.
However, TBT, which causes pollution of many oceans and seas, affects people negatively by causing an increase in fat cells with its endocrine disrupting feature. In experiments on mice, TBT caused an increase in fat cells, while it created fatty liver in 45 days. It is estimated that TBT accumulated in the uterus also transforms stem cells into fat cells.
5-Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA)
PFOA in non-stick food containers can cause cancer and obesity. While PFOA, a synthetic ingredient, is used for many purposes, it's found in non-stick cookware made with Teflon and in microwave popcorn. PFOA, which is in the blood of 98 percent of the US population, causes diseases such as thyroid disorders, overweight and chronic liver disease.
Experiments in mice showed that developmental exposure to PFOA can lead to increased insulin and leptin levels and obesity in midlife. Research continues on whether it causes obesity in humans.
Best measures against endocrine disrupting chemicals that cause obesity
-Eating organic foods and meat of naturally raised animals,
-Staying away from food and drinks kept in plastic containers,
-Using water containers made of stainless steel and quality aluminum instead of plastic,
-Preferring glass instead of giving food and drink to babies from plastic containers,
-Ceramic instead of non-stick cooking utensils,
-Using stainless steel and cast iron,
-Using organic and natural cosmetic products,
-Exercise and regular sleep.
