Oldest Piece of Earth Found in Australia. The age of a crystal found in Australia was determined to be 4,4 billion years.
Using two dating methods, John Valley of the University of Wisconsin and his team determined the age of the piece and concluded that the crystal was the oldest known piece, dating shortly after the formation of the Earth (4,5 billion years ago).
These studies strengthened the theory that the Earth cooled rapidly after it formed, so that the emergence of the oceans was earlier than previously thought.
Valley emphasized that the real curiosity was when life began on Earth, and when the Earth cooled enough for life to begin.
The scientist stated that this crystal, which dates back 4,4 billion years, suggests that microbial life began 100 million years later.
