One step closer to faster, cheaper and more efficient wireless internet access.
Researchers affiliated with IBM have introduced an expanded circuit made of 'graphene', a very thin substance known as the 'miracle' substance of the electronics world.
Thanks to 'graphene' circuits, mobile devices can transmit data much faster than before.
Details of the new system have been published in the journal Nature Communications.
'Graphene' was produced by Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester in 2004. Made from carbon, the structure of graphene is a single atom thin, in the shape of a honeycomb.
Scientists were conducting research in order to produce many electrical, optical, mechanical and thermal products more cheaply and more effectively thanks to graphene compared to silicon.
Nano dimensions
“This is the first time showing graphene devices and circuits made of graphene that can be used for the operation of modern wireless communication systems compared to silicon technology,” said Supratik Guha, director of physical sciences at the IBM Research Center.
The increasing prevalence of data applications has also increased the importance given to mobile devices, which provide information sharing in more efficient and shorter ways.
IBM says graphene material may be particularly suitable for wireless internet connections.
The manufacture of integrated circuits made of graphene was seen as a difficult task, on the grounds that because the material has nano dimensions, it could be damaged during manufacture.
IBM produced a graphene-like material for broadband access in 2011, but the conductivity of the material was poor due to flaws in the manufacturing process. After the first trial, researchers were working to produce similar and more advanced material.
Scientists have developed a new way to preserve the conductivity quality, and thanks to this way, they have started to use advanced graphene circuits.
While it was stated that the graphene circuit is 10 thousand times more advanced than its previous counterparts, the researchers said that this invention is a big step in graphene technology.
