Bionic hand prosthesis was made in Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Engineering Faculty Electrical-Electronics Engineering Department. Asst. Assoc. Dr. İlyas Eminoğlu told Anadolu Agency (AA) that they have achieved successful results from the work they have carried out for about 7 years on the bionic hand.
Eminoğlu stated that they made bionic hands within the scope of the study, which was started with a completely need-oriented approach, and that they also developed virtual hand simulator software that will facilitate the use of prostheses for people who do not have a hand or arm.
“We achieved successful results in the bionic hand study we designed for people without hands. We have succeeded in software and mechanics. Within the scope of our University's Scientific Research Projects (BAP), we provided a resource of 200 thousand liras for the project. With this resource, we established the Biomedical Graduate Research and Product Development Laboratory (BAL-LAB). We made a hand prosthesis here. We made a prosthetic hand that works under the wrist, controlled by two channels of EMG (Electromyogram - electrical voltage produced by twitching muscles), opens and closes at constant speed, and opens and closes with variable speed. In addition, we have developed virtual hand simulation software to facilitate the use of prostheses for those who do not have hands or arms. With the electrical power provided from the muscles, the person will be able to learn to use their prosthesis easily from the simulator.”
Emphasizing that they want to save Turkey from being dependent on foreign sources by further developing their projects, Eminoğlu said, “Hand, arm and underarm prostheses, which are not yet produced in Turkey, are sold for between 30 and 60 thousand dollars. Big money goes abroad from our country every year,” he said.
“We want to collaborate with our businessmen”
Saying that they want to cooperate with domestic manufacturers, Eminoğlu said, "There is no domestic manufacturer in our country for these products, which have a limited number of manufacturers in Europe and America, and which are classified as high-priced medical products due to the technology they contain. The need is met by importing. We want to develop and produce our product with our manufacturers. Collaboration with companies working in the field of biomedicine for prototyping and limited trial production of prostheses is important to us. In two years, we can start domestic bionic hand and arm production on behalf of our country. It doesn't cost much. Only our businessmen need to take care of it. “They will just produce and market it,” he said.
