FORMATION RIGHT IS GAINED
Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Prof. Dr. İsmail Naci Cangül emphasized that they are troubled because of their perspective on basic sciences in Turkey. prof. Dr. Cangül said, “In the past years, not enough importance has been given to basic sciences such as physics, biology and chemistry in Turkey. As the students of the faculty of science and literature, you feel the result of this the most. As your employability is directly restricted in certain areas and your number increases, competition increases and you experience difficulties in this competitive environment. For this reason, in recent years, faculties of science and literature have set the formation target as their own.” he said. Dean Cangül added that the right to receive the formation was won after the struggle and the details will be clarified soon.
UU Faculty of Arts and Sciences Biology Department Head Prof. Dr. Gürcan Güleryüz drew attention to the importance of the congress and said that such organizations are extremely important in terms of educating students.
ENTIRE DNA IS STRENGTHEN UNDER THE HUMAN GENOME PROJECT
Then Bogazici University Molecular Biology and Genetics Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Aslı Tolun made a presentation on 'new techniques in human genetics research'. Aslı Tolun stated that they have been working on human genetics for the last 30 years and said, “We mostly do research on disease genes. We would like to address the latest developments, especially in human genetics, with the latest techniques. The human genome consists of 3,2 billion nucleotides and 24 chromosomes. Since these are double copies, it is 6 billion, but we count it as 3 billion in terms of information. As part of the human genome project, all DNA is sequenced. This is not over yet, after the human genon project, studies are being carried out to understand the functions of all genes.”
prof. Dr. Aslı Tolun added that they are mostly working on what human genes do.
