Hacettepe University (HU) Rector Prof. Dr. Murat Tuncer said that morphine is used to relieve pain and it is very important in this respect.
Stating that the complaint of pain is a serious problem encountered in many diseases, especially in advanced cancer patients, Tuncer emphasized that morphine is the cheapest and most effective pain reliever. He said that the option is a new generation of painkillers that are very costly. Stating that these are also called “synthetic morphines”, Tuncer said, “In more than 90 percent of pain that can hardly be treated in Turkey, such very expensive, imported synthetic morphines are always used. A very serious financial resource is spent on this. On the other hand, these synthetic pain relievers have very serious side effects. Therefore, there is no point in using them,” he said.
Underlining that synthetic painkillers have side effects on hematological tissues, especially on the digestive system, and may lead to the development of resistance to pain after a while, Tuncer said, “The most undesirable, cheapest and most effective treatment is morphine tablets. However, unfortunately we cannot find this in Turkey. It is not imported either, because the cost is very cheap. When the profit margin of the companies is very low, they do not bring it. We, as Hacettepe, have developed a project together with the Ministry of Health, thinking that this is a responsibility towards our country. It is currently being produced and we have applied for a license. We will make it available as soon as the license is issued. It may also be possible to export domestic morphine abroad," he said.
Hacettepe University Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Prof. Dr. Bülent Gümüşel also cooperated with the local pharmaceutical industry of his universities, and İlko İlaç Sanayi ve Ticaret A.Ş. and Ilko Research and Development Center, on cooperation in the development, production and licensing of morphine sulfate tablets that provide fast and extended effect. “Formulation, stability and bioequivalence studies of morphine sulfate tablets, which are planned to be produced under the contract with the project, have been completed. After obtaining the license, the first domestically produced morphine sulfate tablets will be made available to patients," he said. He noted that with its development and production in Turkey, foreign dependency will be eliminated and billions of liras will be saved.
