Plastics will be produced from microbes

Plastics will be produced from microbes. European scientists have started work to produce polymers that function as plastics from organic wastes. In the project called Synpol, the workers of the plastic factory will be bacteria.

María Jiménez, representative of Madrid Polymer Biotechnology Research Center, said that they released the granular bioplastic produced by bacteria with different chemical methods.

Trial centers on how to use this technology have been established in Switzerland and Spain. In the Netherlands, a similar project is being tested on algae. Dr. Lolke Sijtsma stated that algae can produce large amounts of sugar for bioplastic production using sunlight and carbon dioxide. It was stated that pet bottles can be produced with this material.

It is stated that more research needs to be done in order to implement projects that do not consume oil and allow less carbon dioxide emissions.
