
Newswise The seventh Nagamori Award, given annually by the Nagamori Foundation in Kyoto, Japan, to Burak Özpineci, Institutional Researcher and Head of Vehicle and Mobility Systems Research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He is one of six foreign recipients of the award. This award is given to outstanding scientists and engineers working in electric motors, motor drivers and related fields.
Who is Burak Özpineci?
Burak Özpineci received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Ankara Middle East Technical University in 1994.
He received his MA and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN, USA in 1998 and 2002, respectively.
In 2001, he joined the Power Electronics and Electrical Machinery Group, Post Graduate Program with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Knoxville, TN, USA. He became a Full Time Research and Development Personnel in 2002, Group Leader of the Power and Energy Systems Group in 2008, and Group Head of the Power Electronics and Electrical Machines Group in 2011. He currently serves as the Head of Department as a Corporate Member at ORNL. For the Vehicle and Mobility System Research Division. It is also Joint Faculty with the University of Tennessee Bredesen Center. Dr. Özpineci is an IEEE Member.

At ORNL, Özpineci's research focuses on electric propulsion technologies and wireless charging. He is recognized for his research contributions to developing low-cost, high-efficiency, compact electric motor drives for electric transportation systems.

In addition to receiving the Nagamori award, Ozpineci was recognized for his contributions to wireless charging and transportation electrification for electric vehicles as a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Özpineci received the IEEE PELS Vehicle and Transportation Systems Achievement Award from the IEEE Power Electronics Association.
He has two R&D 100 awards and several Distinguished Achievement awards from the Ministry of Energy. He also co-leads the DOE's Electrical Propulsion Technologies Consortium.

Özpineci was named a Corporate Fellow at ORNL in 2021 for his outstanding scientific leadership and career achievements. He is also an associate faculty member with the Bredesen Center at the University of Tennessee, where he earned his doctorate in electrical engineering.
