Aatay Aydın (NERF) is one of the five winners of the 2022 EOS Pipette Award for his work on neural networks and self-knowledge. Each year, the Pipette Award is awarded to the most talented young researchers who have made significant contributions to scientific research in Flanders. It won the Population Favorite Award after receiving almost a third of the votes in an online poll from the public.

Neurologist Çağatay Aydın (36) who researches which neuron networks contribute to self-awareness won the audience award with Eos Pipet. In an online poll, he received nearly a third of the more than 3.000 votes cast for his name.
The ability to distinguish ourselves from others plays a vital role in social interactions. Deficits in self-awareness are typical of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Çağatay Aydın (KU Leuven) investigated how our brain processes sensory information about ourselves and others and provides social recognition.
Aydın exposed the lab rats to familiar and strange smells. The neurologist helped develop new electrodes to closely study how their brains process these stimuli.
The experiments are expected to show which neuronal networks contribute to self-awareness. This knowledge may open new possibilities for further study of developmental disorders such as schizophrenia and autism.
