How to Respond During an Earthquake?
Calm down! If you're inside, stay inside. If you're there, stay outside. If you are indoors, place yourself against a wall near the center of the structure, in a doorway, or under a large piece of furniture (table or desk). Avoid openings such as windows and exterior doors.
If you are outside, stay away from power lines and other things that can fall. Avoid entering buildings (items may fall from the building or the building may fall on you).
Do not use candles, matches or other flames. Fire and exploded gas lines do not mix.
If you are in a vehicle, stop your vehicle and stay there until the earthquake stops.
Avoid using the elevators (they can close).
How to Respond to an Earthquake?
Check for injuries, both to yourself and to other people. Anyone who needs first aid should get help. Check the water, gas and power lines for damage. Close valves if damaged. Look for gas odor. If you smell, open all windows and doors, go outside immediately and call the police (use their phone).
Activate the radio. Save phone calls for emergencies only.
Avoid entering damaged structures.
Be careful around trash and broken glass. Wear boots or thick shoes to avoid cutting your feet.
Be careful around chimneys (they may fall on you).
Avoid going to the beach. Sometimes earthquakes and tsunamis occur after the ground shaking has stopped.
Avoid affected areas.
If you are at work or school, follow the emergency plan or the administrator's instructions. Wait for the alerts.
