Canadian privacy regulators have launched an investigation into TikTok over concerns about its collection of users' data. The video sharing platform, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, was scrutinized for fear of sharing information with Beijing. The Canadian Privacy Commissioner's Office's investigation, in conjunction with provincial privacy regulators, will examine whether TikTok's apps comply with Canadian privacy legislation, particularly with regard to protecting children's privacy.
TikTok said privacy is "a top priority" and the investigation offers an opportunity to clarify its approach to protecting Canadians' privacy. Governments around the world, including the US and Europe, have expressed concerns about the app's data implications.
