Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is now in theaters. It's been a longer than expected wait for the finale of James Gunn's sci-fi comedy series (and the last Marvel movie for the foreseeable future), but that doesn't seem to matter much. The third solo journey for the MCU's cosmic misfits received critical acclaim and enthusiastic audience response, and its opening weekend box office performance was both better and worse than expected.
Guardians 3 takes advantage of the six-year gap between actual episodes, but also suffers from it. While it's fair to say that in recent months there has been some kind of weariness for both superhero movies in general and the MCU in particular, people have had enough time to really miss the Guardians. And since this movie clearly advertises itself as the final destination for these characters, audiences with some sort of investment will feel the end, whether that's true for any of them or not.
Guardians 3 currently has the second-highest opening weekend in the country, after Chris Pratt's last major motion picture, Super Mario Bros. After falling to second place, the film Illumination surpassed the $500 million mark in North America, raising its global tally to $1,155 billion. Third place went to Evil Dead Rising, which earned an additional $5,7 million in the US at the end of April, with a total of $54 million. Ascension is the highest-grossing film in the horror franchise and a strong argument for why movies designed for HBO Max should be released theatrically. It is currently approaching $115 million worldwide.
MCU movies usually have the rest of their release month to themselves, but Guardians 3 will have tough competition in the coming weeks. First of all, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which will be released for Nintendo Switch next week, will occupy the waking hours of almost everyone who owns the console. Fast X, which will hit theaters on May 19, and a remake of The Little Mermaid, which will be released on May 26, could challenge The Guardians to top the box office. The second movie will have the advantage of releasing on Memorial Day weekend and is currently expected to have a $110 million domestic opening weekend.
Whether or not Guardians of the Galaxy makes a splash in theaters over the next few weeks, the film's conclusion represents an important milestone for the MCU as a whole.
