They obtain glycerine, soap and biodiesel from waste oils. AFYON Kocatepe University (AKU) Food Control Research and Application Center Director Assist. Assoc. Dr. Erman Duman said that waste oil can be turned into soap by boiling it in a pot at home. 1.7 thousand tons of the 350 million tons of vegetable oil consumed every year in Turkey first enters the sewerage, then into the groundwater and soil as waste oil. For this reason, waste oils bring with it the problem of environmental pollution. Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs with public service announcements; environmental organizations, municipalities and private companies are working on the recycling of waste oils with special studies.
The most concrete support for the work carried out by these institutions came from AKU. Biodiesel, glycerine and soap are obtained from waste oils in the Food Control Research and Application Center, which was established within the body of AKÜ for 1.2 million liras with the support of the State Planning Organization.
350 THOUSAND TONS OF WASTE OIL
AKÜ Food Control Research and Application Center Director Assist. Assoc. Dr. Erman Duman said that environmental pollution caused by food waste is one of the leading environmental problems. Explaining that this pollution causes significant losses in terms of both economic and public health, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman noted that the annual consumption of vegetable oils, one of Turkey's most important import items after oil, exceeded 1.7 million tons. Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman stated that 350 thousand tons of waste oil is given to the environment every year.
THE CAUSE OF FISH DEATH IS WASTE OILS
Emphasizing that it is possible to reuse waste oils, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman said, “When the waste part of the oil used at home is poured into the sink, it first mixes into the sewer, then into the streams, streams, lakes and seas. In addition, it harms soil and groundwater. Unfortunately, after that, a chain reaction occurs. 1 liter of waste vegetable oil used in frying pollutes 1 million liters of water when mixed with water resources. Waste oil covers the water source in a thin layer. Unfortunately, this layer cuts off the contact of creatures living in water with oxygen. This is the main reason for fish deaths, which we often hear in the summer months," he said.
BIODIESEL IS OBTAINED
Mentioning the importance of recycling from waste oils in terms of environment, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Erman Duman said that waste oils subjected to chemical tests can be used in the production of biodiesel and soap if they comply with the regulation. Noting that vegetable oils can be used for frying at home 3 times, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman stated that, according to the type of food used in frying, the most natural use of vegetable oil in terms of health is at most 2 times.
Advice to citizens 'Do not pour waste oil into the sink', Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman explained that municipalities can generate serious income from this. Emphasizing the need to expand waste oil collection areas in villages, towns and estates, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman said, “In certain periods, these waste oils can be collected to produce biodiesel or soap. Thus, input is provided to the country's economy from waste material and the environment is protected.
SOAP FROM WASTE OIL
Explaining that biodiesel production involves some risks, it is more appropriate to carry out the tests by appropriate enterprises, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman stated that anyone who wants can produce soap in their own home, using their stove and pot. Emphasizing that soap can be made with peace of mind, without the need for any test, from an oil known to be used only twice, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman said, “It is possible to produce soap by mixing waste oil with 'sodium hydroxide' or 'potassium hydroxide', known as salty compounds, and subjecting it to heat treatment. Waste oil and components are placed in a saucepan and heated on the stove over low heat. It is necessary to stir continuously until the waste oil reaches the dough density. When the dough reaches its density, it is poured into molds, left to cool and soap is obtained. Here, it is necessary to pay attention to the rate of use of the components and the quality of the materials to be used.
THEY PRODUCED POPPY SOAP WITH NATURAL PEELING EFFECT
Reminding that the cosmetics industry uses various chemicals to provide the peeling effect, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman said that he can use poppy, one of the traditional foods of Afyonkarahisar, to improve the peeling effect naturally. Noting that poppy soap production was carried out successfully at AKÜ Food Control Research and Application Center, Assist. Assoc. Dr. Duman explained that the poppy, which will be mixed into the soap prepared at home and completely dispersed, will create a natural peeling effect.
