Tubitak Support for the Project Developed with Plant Extracts and Liquid Glass Mixture. It is managed by MSK University Dean of Technology Faculty and Woodworking Industrial Engineering Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. With the project undertaken by Osman Göktaş, it is aimed to develop new types of natural paints that are resistant to external conditions and to determine the resistance values ​​against some harmful elements for the upper surfaces of wood materials with a mixture of plant extracts and liquid glass.

Stating that wood, which is a natural and basic building material, is used extensively in indoor and outdoor environments where people and living things live, Prof. Dr. Osman Göktaş said, “In addition to the advantages of wood material, it also has some disadvantages such as being destroyed by biotic and abiotic pests, loss of color and deformation. Many protective and coloring materials have been developed to overcome these disadvantages. However, as the risks of volatile organic compounds emitted by these preservatives and coloring agents in terms of human and environmental health have emerged, the interest in natural preservatives and colorants has increased and a demand has begun to emerge in this field. In recent years, colorants from plant extracts, water-based varnishes, boron compounds, etc., which are harmless or less harmful to the environment and human health, have been produced against biotic and abiotic pests that damage wood materials. natural wood preservatives are being developed.
However, there are scientific studies showing that these natural products, especially in the case of outdoor use, degrade over time, such as washing, color change, burning and decay, and that they cannot fulfill the expected function partially or completely. For this reason, increasing the resistance of natural wood colorants to be used especially outdoors against biotic and abiotic pests has emerged as a new problem that needs to be solved. In order to solve the aforementioned problem, this study will be both original and a first, since no study has been found in the literature with a mixture of liquid glass and plant dye before.

Drawing attention to the fact that thanks to the study in question, natural paints can be obtained for wooden material surface resistant to external factors from the mixture of natural paint with liquid glass. Dr. Göktaş said, “Within the scope of the project, dye extracts to be obtained from licorice root, indigo and pomegranate peel plants are mixed with liquid glass and applied on scotch pine, chestnut and mahogany test samples by immersion method; Painted samples will be subjected to washing, salt water mist, color stability, hot-cold shock, burning, brown and white fungal rot tests to determine their resistance. In this way, protective and coloring products to be developed; It can be used safely and with less maintenance compared to existing products, in marine vehicles, park and garden furniture, children's playground furniture, wooden houses and all kinds of wooden structures in environments where water, sun, frost, extreme heat, fire and rot fungi can be exposed.
As a result, less environmental pollution, less maintenance, longer use of products and less wood material will be used. This study, being the first study in the literature, will provide important data for future studies and will make important contributions to the problems of coloring and protection of wood materials with a technological product, liquid glass.
