Work continues at full speed for the production of electricity from tea waste. The General Directorate of TEA Enterprises (ÇAYKUR) initiated a study to generate electricity from the wastes of tea processed in factories by pyrolysis method (obtaining methane gas with high temperature). Mustafa Acar, Head of the Department of Energy Agriculture Research Center of the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute, said that they met with ÇAYKUR officials and suggested the pyrolysis method to generate electricity from waste.

A study on the conversion of agricultural wastes into biofuels was initiated at the Energy Agriculture Research Center, which was under the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute Directorate of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock and became operational in 2011. In this context, hazelnut husk, tea powder, sunflower stem, rapeseed stem, paddy stem, wheat stem, corn stem and paddy husk were investigated and their thermal values ​​were determined. Agricultural wastes, which were divided into small pieces, were compressed with the help of a special machine and converted into solid fuel (pellet – briquette). Mustafa Acar, Head of the Department of Energy Agriculture Research Center of the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute, stated that the heating value of domestic lignite coal is around 3 thousand calories, while tea powder is 4 calories. Stating that they bought the raw material from ÇAYKUR for the research on tea waste during the studies, Acar said, “They told us that they had a problem with waste from ÇAYKUR. We told them that the waste left after the processing of tea leaves can be converted into solid fuel. They also asked if it could be converted into electrical energy. We also said that methane gas can be obtained from wastes with the pyrolysis method (heating the wastes at high temperature to obtain methane gas), and electricity production can be made by burning this gas. ÇAYKUR welcomed the choice of pyrolysis and we know that they have started a study on the evaluation of tea wastes by the pyrolysis method.

Expressing that ÇAYKUR generates approximately 20-25 thousand tons of tea waste annually, Acar said, “The annual amount of waste reaches approximately 45-50 thousand tons together with other private tea factories. In fact, all of these wastes can be converted into biofuels. Tea wastes can also be processed by pyrolysis method and converted into solid fuel such as pellets-briquettes. It is clear that there is a very serious potential. Conversion of these wastes into biofuels will not only provide a serious recovery, but also eliminate the negative impact on the environment.

Acar said that in the current situation, some of the tea wastes are given to the farmers as fertilizer and the remaining part is preserved. ÇAYKUR, on the other hand, accelerated its efforts to generate electricity by converting approximately 25 thousand tons of tea waste by pyrolysis method. After approximately 1.5 years of preliminary work, it was stated that the 'Etude Project' tender will be made within 10 days in order to investigate the project and prepare the feasibility report. As a result of the report, it was stated that if the project was found feasible, it would be realized.
