Karolinska Institutet Research Center in SWEDEN has achieved promising results regarding cancer.Swedish scientists gave antiviral drugs to patients with brain tumors for 1 year in addition to standard treatment. It turned out that the lifespan of the patients was extended by 56 months.
It has been determined that antiviral drugs used in the treatment of viruses prolong the life of patients with brain tumors.

Karolinska Institutet researchers administered antiviral drugs to 50 cancer patients with a malignant brain tumor for 1 year, in addition to the standard treatment with chemotherapy and radiation. Half of the group took the drug continuously and the second half at intervals. After 2 years, it was determined that 90 percent of those who used it continuously and 25 percent of the other 62 people were alive.

SURVIVAL INCREASED 70 PERCENT

It was determined that the life expectancy of the patients using the drug increased by 13.5 to 56.4 months and the quality of life of most of them increased compared to the patients who did not use the drug. At 2 years, patients' survival times multiplied by percentage increased by 18 percent to 70 percent.

The head of the research team, Dr. Cecilia Soderberg-Naucler said: “This is an incredible result and a big step forward for cancer treatment. Our work is very promising. The results are surprising and a new glimmer of hope for cancer patients,” she said.

Dr. Naucler emphasized that the drug will be tested in other types of cancer in the future.

D., director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, USA, who specializes in brain cancer. David Reardon commented, "These results are very exciting" for the Swedish scientists' research.
