The twin-engine fighter jet has a distinctive avionics system that uses a digital information control system and a new radar system that can effectively engage eight targets simultaneously.

The Sukhoi Su-35S carries a 30mm gun, has 12 hard spots and can detect targets over 400 kilometers, while its radar can track 30 targets simultaneously. The fighter has a range of over 3.500 kilometers without refueling. Highlights of the world's most powerful Fourth Generation fighter include new engines, avionics and radar.

Su-35 Engines

The use of high-thrust engines significantly differentiates the Sukhoi Su-35 from previous Su-27 family jets. The new engines were developed by NPO Saturn, a UEC subsidiary, and are known under the name 117S.

The new engines are basically a deep upgrade of the production AL-31F engines, with the fifth generation technologies used in the upgrade. The upgrade increased the thrust of the engine by 16% to 14.500 kgf with afterburners and a maximum dry thrust of 8.800 kgf. The engine has a significantly improved expected life (31x – 2x times) compared to the AL-2,7F production: 500 to 1.000 hours between repairs (and 1.500 hours of run time before the first overhaul), with the total expected life increasing from 1500 hours to 4000 hours.

Two engine manufacturers – Ufa Engine Manufacturing Company (UMPO) and Rybinsk-based NPO Saturn – will produce 117S engines in collaboration with each other. Production partners NPO Saturn and UMPO decided to equally share the scope of work for the production of 117S engines.

Avionics and Equipment

The avionics used in the new jet are an entirely new onboard electronics system. The entire complement of Sukhoi Su-35 electronics is integrated into a single system.

The avionics and other equipment are integrated into a single unified system with an information processing and control system consisting of two digital CPUs, interface and data conversion systems, and a head-up display (HUD) implementing the glass cockpit concept.

These instruments and other aircraft's avionics systems were developed by the Ramenskoye Instrument Design Bureau, which is also a subsidiary of Concern Radioelectronic Technologies (KRET).

KRET engineers also designed a new navigation system for the fighter aircraft – the BINS-SP-2 suspended inertial navigation system.

The navigation system can identify the aircraft's position independently of satellite positioning and without communicating with ground-based systems, with up to twice the accuracy levels offered by previous versions. The BINS-SP-2 has an expected operating life of 10.000 hours, almost twice that of comparable navigation systems currently available.

Meanwhile, this state-of-the-art navigation system, created from the ground up by KRET subsidiaries, will also be used in the Fifth Generation advanced frontline aircraft system.

Airborne IRBIS Radar

The Su-35 radar system, which does not have APAR, can detect targets at distances up to 400 kilometers, track air targets and intercept eight of these targets simultaneously.

The Sukhkoi Su-35S owes these capabilities to the new Irbis phased array radar control system. The system was developed by the Tikhomirov Research Institute of Instrument Engineering, a subsidiary of KRET, and is produced by the Ryazan State Instrument Factory, another subsidiary of KRET.

The state-of-the-art system enables the Sukhoi Su-35S to quickly detect and simultaneously track up to four ground targets or up to 30 airborne targets and engage up to eight airborne targets simultaneously. In addition, the radar control system has friend-foe identification for air and sea objects, can determine the class and type of airborne targets and take aerial photographs of the ground.

The system can be used at any time of the day in all weather conditions and remains effective against both natural and organized interventions of enemy electronic warfare systems.

An oscillator with a peak power output of 20 kW used in passive phased array radar makes Irbis the most powerful radar control system in the world.

This puts the Sukhoi Su-35S radar system in line with state-of-the-art international designs and is ahead for most US and European active and passive phased array radars.

Estimated to cost around $50 million per piece, the single-pilot aircraft is controlled without the use of any analog devices and can fly at speeds of up to 2.200 mph (3.600 kph) with a range of 1.500 miles (2.400 km). The aircraft, which has been in service with Russian forces since 2014, can carry a wide variety of weapons, including rockets, air-to-air missiles and air-to-surface missiles.
