A Study from Sakarya University Chemistry Department that Reduces Washing Time and Temperature of Laundry

A Study on the Washing Time and Temperature of Laundry from Sakarya University, Department of Chemistry. With the study initiated within SAU, it is aimed to reduce the washing temperature and time of the laundry and imports by using bleach catalysts instead of imported activators that increase the effectiveness of detergents.
Sakarya University (SAU) Faculty of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry Lecturer Prof. Dr. Salih Zeki Yıldız, in his written statement, stated that with the project prepared within the scope of the Industrial Theses Program (SAN-TEZ), they carried out a pioneering work in the cleaning industry, reducing the washing time and temperature.

Pointing out that the chemicals used in bleaching stains and cotton raw fabrics and the processing process are important in terms of energy, Yıldız said:

“Bleaching is the process in which active molecules are used to whiten by decolorizing various substrates (the substance affected by enzymes) through chemical oxidation. For this purpose, peroxide-containing bleaching chemicals are generally preferred on the basis of the sector. When high temperature and long washing time are compared in terms of energy consumption, it is known that peroxide-based bleaches reach sufficient bleaching efficiency at temperatures above 60 degrees. Increasing the effectiveness of bleaches below 60 degrees was achieved with the addition of bleach activators, known as substances that facilitate the formation of the reaction. The use of these activators ensured the continuation of the bleaching effectiveness in short washing time and low temperature washing conditions.

This is important in terms of saving energy and not damaging the fabric and paint, but high doses of use bring a cost disadvantage.

Pointing out that in recent years, new generation bleaching catalysts with higher efficiency have been tried to be developed and commercialized instead of activators, adding that the high effectiveness of catalysts even at low rates makes the studies on the subject interesting.

Yıldız concluded his statement as follows:

“In case of the realization of the project, scientific, technological and economical use of catalysts instead of activators, domestic production of an import item of 100 million Euros, creation of a higher technology level with production, technological, competitive position in the national market against international companies and reaching a competitive level in the international market.
