A SpaceX Starlink user in the UK shared that they received broadband high-speed internet service. Download speeds are 430Mbps (megabits per second) in West Cornwall, a rural area on England's rocky southwest tip. The region forms a peninsula with its sandy beaches and wild steppes. SpaceX says Starlink is ideal for rural and remote areas where reliable internet access is too expensive to get. The 430Mbps download speed is quite fast compared to the Starlink user experience with the previous internet provider – “[…]
We often heard the words that our village does not have water or the health center is insufficient. As we live in an age where these expressions must be left behind, let's dive into the details of this amazing possibility.
Let's quote a user's statement via Reddit.
The current speed for my new home was 1Mbps, so I needed to find a fast solution,” they said.
According to SkyNews data, average download speeds from other UK telecommunications companies are around 79Mbps and around 25Mbps in rural Cornwall.
SpaceX advertises Starlink on its website Starlink.com that “Users can expect to see download speeds between 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps in most locations and latency as low as 20ms.”
The UK government has reportedly been in talks with SpaceX officials since last year to bring Starlink broadband internet to rural areas as part of the country's 'Project Gigabit' programme.
UK Digital Infrastructure Minister Matt Warman met with several telecommunications company leaders in March 2021, including representatives from SpaceX, for a potential partnership under the programme.
The Biggest Project for Improving Internet Speed
The program aims to connect rural and remote communities where internet service is unreliable.
The $6,9 billion program works to partner with multiple companies to help provide internet service in rural areas across the country to bridge the digital divide. Approximately 510.000 households and businesses in the country will be the first to benefit from Project Gigabit.
It is unknown whether Project Gigabit is currently working with SpaceX to connect rural areas in the UK.
Authorities have chosen SpaceX as the Gigabit Project internet provider. The study area is rural areas in Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Cumbria, Dorset, Durham, Essex, Northumberland, South Tyneside and Tees Valley.
Consisting of 1.469 active satellites in Low Earth Orbit, SpaceX Starlink currently serves 25 Starlink users in 145.000 countries.
Coverage includes the United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Slovakia, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
Unfortunately, we cannot see our country in this current coverage area.
The company's ultimate goal is to launch at least 12.000 internet-beam satellites to cover the Earth with broadband internet.
