Turkey ranks 13th in the world in terms of the number of students it sends abroad. In this context, the amount of money Turkey spends on education is 2 billion dollars annually. Students who go abroad for university education mostly prefer business, economics, finance, international trade and engineering departments.
Deniz Akar, General Coordinator of Turkey International Education Fairs (IEFT), stated that the interest in education abroad is increasing day by day and said, "Turkey's annual spending on education abroad is at the level of 2 billion dollars."
Akar said that the demand for international education has increased due to factors such as "globalization, the internet and the use of English as a common language", and that the number of students studying abroad will increase to 2020 million in 8, according to UNESCO reports.
Stating that the countries with the highest demand for education abroad are America and England, Akar said, “According to the latest figures, over 700 thousand students go to America. In England, this figure is around 350-400 thousand. Following these two countries, France with 300 thousand students, Germany and China with 250 thousand each follow. In recent years, important developments have been taking place in other countries as well,” he said.
Stating that Turkey ranks 13th among the countries sending students abroad, Akar stated that they estimate that approximately 120 students go abroad per year, especially those who enroll in undergraduate and graduate programs and language courses. Explaining that approximately one third of the students go abroad for university education, Akar stated that the most preferred countries are America, England, Canada, Australia and Germany.
Pointing out that students who pay an average of 10-15 thousand dollars to universities abroad spend around 20 thousand dollars annually, Akar said, "Since there are 40 thousand students abroad for university education, approximately 800 million dollars go to university education abroad from Turkey."
Pointing out that the remaining 80 thousand students spend an average of 10-15 thousand dollars annually, Akar said, "Turkey's annual expenditure on education abroad is at the level of 2 billion dollars."
“Turkey cannot earn enough income”
Akar said that around 30 thousand foreign students come to Turkey and more than 20 thousand of them have scholarships. Pointing out that there is not enough income from foreign students, Akar said, "While Turkish students spend 30 million dollars only in Ukraine, students from all over the world leave a maximum of 70 million dollars in our country."
