Nanotechnology Project by Turkish Scientists to Revolutionize Heating. The first product in which the invention, which is expected to provide significant changes in a wide area from residential heating to astronaut clothing, from fashion to the defense industry, was used, was the “portable sauna”.

Electronic Material Production and Application Center (EMUM), which was established within Dokuz Eylul University with the support of the Ministry of Development and aims to develop high value-added technologies from domestic sources, draws attention with the patents it has created. The center, which received patents for many inventions developed for the first time in the world in the field of nanotechnology and chemistry technologies, made a revolutionary breakthrough in heating technology with the project of developing nanocomposite films and textile materials that dissipate heat.

HEAT DISPENSING CARPET, BLANKETS ARE PRODUCED

EMUM Director Prof. Dr. Erdal Çelik and DEU Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department Research Assistant Dr. With the project of developing nanocomposite materials that dissipate heat, which Mustafa Erol started in 2007, products such as portable sauna, underfloor heating system for residences and greenhouses, water heating system for combi boilers, heat-emitting carpets and blankets were developed.

Making a statement to the AA correspondent about the heat-emitting textile material, Prof. Dr. Çelik said that they are working on nanotechnology projects that can be applied to daily life in the center, which has one of the few advanced devices in the world, and that they aim to develop functional materials that will make life easier by working at scales of one billionth of a meter.

Çelik, who explained that they developed a project to see if they could produce a portable sauna as a final product during their discussions on the idea of ​​developing heat-emitting materials with nanotechnological intervention, said, “With the project supported by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology within the scope of San-Tez Program, a carbon dioxide used in boilers where metals are melted in the iron and steel industry. He said that they are trying to apply the graphite material, which is a derivative, to nano dimensions.

Explaining that they processed the graphite, which they had reduced to nano-sizes by grinding within the scope of the 6-year study, on textile and film materials by means of polymers, Çelik stated that the material, which emits heat with 12 volt electricity, provides a homogeneous heating.

Explaining that they were able to determine in advance how many degrees the heat-emitting textile or film could reach, Çelik said that the material they developed could be bent, folded, stretched as desired.

He stated that heating can be done by means of metal resistances in classical heaters, the heat generated on the wire at a very high degree is spread to the environment and heat is created, and in nanocomposite material, the heating takes place homogeneously throughout the material, which provides a safer and lower cost heating opportunity compared to the classical system.

Saying, "We have developed a technology that will revolutionize heat technologies," Çelik said that they have produced portable saunas, heat-emitting carpets and blankets by using technology.

Stating that he still uses the portable sauna they produce at home, Çelik said:

“We can turn the surface covered with 2 square meters of nanocomposite film into a portable sauna in the form of a cylindrical chamber. Inside the sauna, a temperature of 75 degrees occurs. Another product that we produce with nanocomposite material is the heat emitting carpet. We can also use this material, which emits heat in the area where it is laid, for underfloor heating of houses. We are in talks with companies for the mass production of the material. The use of this product in daily life will begin with heat-emitting carpets, portable saunas and small-sized heat-emitting textiles. We continue to work on improving the heat-emitting blankets and clothes.”

IT WILL REDUCE HEATING COSTS

Dr. Mustafa Erol, on the other hand, said that this material, which can be used in any area where heat is needed, is produced with very cheap raw materials and has lower installation and operating costs compared to other heating tools.

Stating that the material, which is produced under laboratory conditions with an average total cost of 100 lira per square meter, can be produced much cheaper if mass production is started, Erol stated that houses can be heated much cheaper than natural gas with nanocomposite material.

ALSO TRIED ON CLOTHES

Stating that the trials of the system on clothing continue and that development studies are also carried out for astronaut clothing, military and sportive use, Erol said, “This technology will bring important changes in winter clothing in the near future. For example, clothes made of battery-operated heat-emitting textiles will be able to eliminate the cold problem in winter. We are open to suggestions for improving the system in different directions. In addition, we are in talks with textile companies in terms of design," he said.
